If the solenoid is engaging and the starter is spinning most likely your starter's clutch is bad or the solenoid is only partially engaged. The solenoid maybe engaging enough to run starter but not enough to engage ring gear. Hate to say it but the best thing to do is pull the starter and test the clutch and solenoid yourself when cold.

This only happens on the first start when very cold or sometimes on an overnight start. It will always start on the second attempt. This is an automatic 3.3l

I have a rebuilt starter with new solonoid (rebuilt due to the same reason)

I have had the following opinions:

1) poor rebuild
2) power or grounding issue
3) electrical issue thru ignition

I understand that there is no relay for the starting system.

Does anyone have experience with areas where I may be losing volts in the cicuit?

I checked the terminals on the starter and battery. I believe the circuit goes thru the ignition and key assembly as well.

Thanks in advance for suggestions,

Don
