BMW Since 1945, by Richard Busenkell, copyright 1981, shows detailed figures for BMW models built from 1945-1981.
There were several options available and different versions of motors made by BMW and put in the E24 cars.
According to this particular book, if you have the US 3210cc motor, manufactured during and after 1978, the stats show 8.4 compression and 177hp @ 5500rpm. There was also a Euro 3210cc that was tuned to deliver 200hp. (btw, This same motor in the Euro 733 turns 197hp.)
Hopefully this helps rather than adds to the confusion.

I have a 79 federalized 633csi built in March 79. The more websites I visit, the more books (Walton included) and articles I read, the more confused I get. I get different info. on compression ratios, hp, engine controls, and emission equipment.
This may not mean much to anyone else, but I'm trying to determine the specs. on this engine. How do I tell if it is the 178 hp (8.4:1) of 1978, or the 174 (8.0:1)hp of 1979?
My goal is to make reasonable improvements to the engine, but I don't want to start tearing into something if I don't know where I'm starting. All advice greatly appreciated
