I don't have a reference here for the correct cold valve clearance but on a M30 in a 1986 model when the valves are set correctly there is still a clicking noise a idle, it is the injector system. I did not have confidence in that explanation when I first heard it. I set the valves myself just before having a shop do a tune-up/inspection, and the clicking noise remained the same.
