I have a Bronzit `88 ///M6. It came from the P.O. with ARE 16X7" wheels and 225/50 Goodyear M+S Eagle GT tires on it. It needs an offset of -20 mm. (et20, I think they call it). I think that the 740 wheels you mention may have an offset greater than that, say -23 or more. This would explain why they rub on the front, but not the back of your 635. It's probably the struts that they are touching.
You can get wheel recommendations @ Tire Rack and some other sites, w/the proper offset. A less expensive way to go is to get spacers from Tire Rack. I use plain old fender washers, one-to-a-lug, on my `72 TII & it works fine. I just have to be careful about hub centering before torqueing them down or I get the 45 mph shake as a reward for it (out-of-round shake speed, 55 mph for out of balance).
I recently purchased rims for my '85 635. They are the rims off of a '97 740il. They're 16 inch with a 225/50 series tire. The problem I have is that the front wheels rub somewhere. I wanted to know if they are of the smae offset or if the rear wheels are maybe wider than the fronts and maybe all I need to do is swap the fronts with the rears. One thing I did notice is that the cenetr caps didn't fit flush against the rim like the rear ones did. Please if anybody can help me. Thanks.

I have these same wheel with an et=23MM and Dunlop SP8000 @225X50X16. I have a trace rub on the fronts just below the lower spring perch. The offset probably should be about 18-20MM ideally. The spacers are available from BMP as the Tire Rack refused to sell them to me.
Whether or not you get a rub is mostly dependent upon your tire choice. Different manufacturers' tires vary slightly even though the size specs are identical.
