HELP!! 633 runs bad while temp gauge moves quickly (archive)

Help! I have an 83 633 and the car has been running for months without a problem. I took the car to the do-it-yourself carwash and power washed the exterior, and now when I'm driving, it starts running incredibly rough.

The temp gauge which has never had a problem goes all the way to the left and I lose power...then it goes back to normal and the car runs fine. This seems to happen for a few minutes, then the car runs fine. I've been driving in some very cold weather lately, and this is one of the warmer days, so I'm surprised this is happening now. The whole time this is happening, the car is jerking around. I can keep the car running, but it keeps cutting out like there is some electrical connection that has been affected. (It doesn't seem like a cold start valve...but it is definitely tied into the temp sender gauge), because when that moves quickly, the car stumbles.

Also, I tried to start the car and am just getting a whirling sound, it doesn't actually turn over the engine.

I don't know if these are related or not. Any ideas??
