You mechanic has it somewhat correct. The battery acts as a buffer for the alternator. The alternator generates voltage and then the battery takes in the at voltage and gives out a constant voltage. If the battery is completely dead, it will not provide this function correctly and may damage other systems in the car. I would suggest recharging it and then driving the car. BTW if you have a BMW battery remember to remove the access plugs on the top of the battery before charging. Also while they are removed check the water level and top up with DISTILLED WATER ONLY! Hope this clears it up.
