BMW was also shocked by the accumulation. A voluntary "Walnut Shell" cleaning was done on the 3.5L in 86/87 to clean the carbon. In 96 took the head off my 85 to install a 282 cam, lots of carbon on the intake valves, pistons, etc. No I'm not using cheap gas, oil or etc. This year, I replaced the older 3.5l, 185HP, with the later 3.5L 208HP. The later 3.5 intake valves, 102k, were cleaner than my early 3.5. Draw you own conlusions; however, the early model 3.5 appears to suffer more.
