If you don't have a vacuum leak then it could possibly be that the Oxygen sensor is dead. This would cause the ECU to go full rich. The oxygen sensors are normally changed every 50K miles.

79 633 has been running rich for months, now recently will start to lose power until I floor it, where it will cough and sputter and finally backfire a little and drive normal again. Also will not idle below 1600. Any help would be appreciated, or any links to already posted info would be great. Thanks.
