Try searching the board archives under "purcase" and "buying" advise. There are several good general posts on this topic that might be of interest. Some general answers....
1. this would be a daily driver for me. considering the age of these cars, how reliable would they be as everyday drivers?
Seem to be reasonably reliable considering the age range of the cars. M30 engine is fairly common in the BMW lineup, and considered to be very good.
2. are any of the parts overly expensive or hard to find for these cars?
Body and interior parts can be expensive and difficult. A lot of drivetrain parts are common to the E28 five series, and therefore readily available. Suspension parts, brakes, etc. are readily available.
Also, the sixes came standard with TRX metric wheels and tires; these are generally replaced with 16" or 17" wheels to accept standard tires. Search archives on "TRX" or "offset" to get tons of posts on this topic.
3. do they have any inherent problems or weaknesses?
Automatic transmission can be problematic, probably more because of the age of the car than any real design problems. Have seen posts regarding transmission damage due to incorrect smog testing procedure.
Rust is the big killer; but then again you owned a 3.0, so i guess it is relative. Check front fenders, strut tops, around sunroof, under tail light assemblies, rockers. Rust free examples are available and worth the price due to cost of repair.
Other common headaches seem to be the accessory electrical systems. Most of this stuff can be repaired yourself, and won't leave you stranded.
4. were some build years better than others?
I have only owned the E28 based models, which are post about 1982 build year The E28 based cars are generally considered improved. The earlier cars were E12 based.
The 1988 and later have slightly more horespower (208 vs 185 I think). Also, the bumper assemblies look better and are less prone to corrosion, as the side bellows are body coloured plastic rather than black soft plastic. 1988 was the last build year, but registration year may be later.
The link below provides an excellent overview of changes by build year.
thank you in advance for the help!!!!!!!
