It may be just a broken cable. The bouncing is often an indication that the cable is runing dry and if left unlubed, will break. There is also a box inline which is fed by a short cable before the main cable to the speedo. It's fairly easy to check. Mine is also a '77 and I would be glad to assist. Contact me directly
After 7 years of my speedo doing the "bouncing" thing at low speed untill about 15-20 mph, then getting steady, it finally does not move other than a bit of bouncing at take-off then sitting at 0mph with the ittermittant flickering bouncing every several seconds but otherwise not registering a speed.

First off, it is an E-12 based 1977 630CSi, NOT the E-28 based later models.

Are the basics the same between chassis platforms? I.E., electric sensors and what is the best way of trouble shooting the end of the problem? can I use a degreaser to clean the sensor at the rear of the driveshaft to see if that is the culprit and if so, what am I looking for?

What other areas may be a notable culprit before I do a dash removal?(uuurgh)

TIA
