Though the big wreck with Stewart flipping looks very dramatic it's far less dangerous. Every time the car tumbles and looses parts it disipates energy....a lot of "little" impacts. In Earnhardt's case, he went from nearly 180mph to 0 pretty much instantly. "Rolling doesn't kill you, Stopping kills you". Most likely he suffered a basal skull fracture, injuring the brain stem, as his head was thrown forward while his body was constrained. As someone said, "He died doing what he loved"...We should all be so lucky. A HANS devise quite possibly would have prevented this but not wearing one is a choice he made (as was racing)knowing the risks. R.I.P.
