I just bought a 84 M635 and wanted to know exactly what they do to make it US legal and what I can do to it and still have it pass CA smog. I wish there was some way of getting away with taking off the cats.

My '85 m635 has added Lambda control, cat.,door strengthening beams "I think". They disabled the headlight aim control inside. I think they were supposed to add sidemarker lites in fenders but this was mercifly not done to mine.
Mine passed SMOG in CA. before. Now I have added a hot wire intake and adjustable fuel injection. I should be as clean or probably cleaner than before, (I hope)! I have thought about bypassing cat. completely but a highflow cat. would probably not be too restrictive.
