I just bought a 1986 Euro M635 with 185,000 miles on the clock. I'm the second owner and understand that the valves were done at 160,000 miles. And at 175,000 miles the transmission was rebuilt, and new shocks and control arm bushings installed. I think these motors are very reliable, and with proper fluid changes, I expect at least another 100,000 miles without problems.

I'd be interested to know the mileage of everyone's S38 engine. I'm interested in longevity. How long do these engines go before they need a rebuild? Is it as good as other bimmer engines? I had an '86 528e that went 260,000 before giving up the ghost. Will an M6 do that? I'm currently at 94k. What are the weaknesses in the S38, or maintenance issues to watch for?
