M6 engine identification--originality (archive)

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying an M6 and have viewed a car (1988, VIN ends 1550)that seems solid/honest apart from the engine appears to be too new! All of the (albeit slightly older) M6's I have seen have the the oil filler at the front of the cam-cover. This car has it lower and towards the centre like on a ~1990 M5 (it also has the HT leads retained within a plastic cover).
My questions are: Where is the engine number on an s35 (is it easy/possible to see it)? Are engine numbers the same as the VIN numbers (like on older 2002's which is all I know...)?
any info or links to data appreciated,

Dave
