I have a 1983 633csi produced in 9/82 and it also has a stamp on the engine block on the driver's side that reads 3.5. Now I know that my engine is a 3.2, notwithstanding the stamped label of 3.5. I don't know the answer to your question, but - I am guessing - that the block was the same for both 3.2 and 3.5 engines and the difference is in the head. Perhaps others more knowledge can respond.

I have run into the same question. My car was produced in late '84 also. I have been told by the previous owner and a mechanic, that it does have the larger engine. I had to pick up an '85 owners manual because the car had newer features and options in it that the original manual didn't cover. I guess they started early preparing for '85! Can anyone add to this?

Today i noticed on the side of the engine block on the drivers side of the car near the oil cap, that there is a small 3.5 stamped into the metal, I have a 633 made in 07-84, is it possibe I have a 3.5l engine and not the 3.2l? (I'm not talking about the thing that says 3.2/3.5).
