I don't know about an 89 as I have an 83 633, but there is a relay in the fuse box for your windows and sunroof. Recently, I had the same problem and I checked this relay, the kid control as I call it which is a switch to keep the windows in control located on the bottom dash in the driver's footwell. Also, my BMW electronic book states there is a circuit breaker underneath the dash on the left hand side of the driver's footwell for the windows and sunroof. My problem was that I had a fuse that was blown. The interesting part was that this fuse only controlled my sunroof and not my windows. I replaced the fuse and viola, power to windows and sunroof. You might also check the BMW sites. They have a lot of information on the power windows and sunroof setup. Sorry I could not help more.
Sometimes, (2/5 times), when I turn on the ignition, there is no power to any of the windows or the sunroof, and the switches do not illuminate. If I open the driver's door, the power is restored to the windows & sunroof as the interior light comes on. Closing the door cuts all the power again. The power is restored usually within about 15 mins of driving.
I'm guessing perhaps a relay is sticking? Can anyone suggest what & where to check?TIA
