Thanks you Lars, you're a lifesaver. I wonder about whether the two gears were engaging at the same time. Here's what happened, as I remember. I backed out of my spot, with no problems. Went for first, and the car died. Thought it was just cold, tried to restart in neutral. As I did, the car lurched backward, and I knew something was wrong. I tried again for first, and as I let out again, there was no noise like grinding gears, it just plain stopped like the trans was frozen. No noise at all, sounded like letting the clutch out in 4th with your foot on the brake, as you would do to test the clutch.
Does it sound to you like I may have killed my gearbox, or still likely a linkage? The sad part is I just spent 1500 having my gearbox rebuilt due to failed synchros and the like - but as far as I know nothing was done with the linkage. I sure wish I went with a short shifter, maybe this wouldn't have happened.

Thanks again for all your help - I ended up flatbedding it home. Thank goodness I have tow on my insurance.

Sounds like the linkage at the bottom of the shift lever slipped out of place and you are not now actually engaging any of the linkages that go from the shift lever to the transmission shifting levers. If you are, and you can engage 2nd gear, you might actually get the trans in reverse and 2nd at the same time, although I doubt this can happen???? If it can and you let out the clutch, goodbye transmission.

You need to get under the car and locate the shifting levers on the side of the transmission and manually move them all into neutral. Then, you might be able to gingerly shift the car with the shift lever, being very deliberate and slow through the shift pattern.

This can happen when the linkage wears out through high miles, or improper shifting, speed shifting, and such. Sounds like you need at least all new bushes, but I would bet a rebuild of the whole shift linkage is in order. I am talking about the linkage outside on top of the trans, not inside the transmission.

Go carefully on this one, and be sure all the gears are disengaged (by the outside levers) before attempting to drive and/or shift. I've had this happen before, and it's not really a big problem, but if it starts happening, it will happen again unless you fix the linkage properly.
