The process to import a vehicle isn't really that hard. Yes, it would be easier to import the cars had they be coming from the USA. However, if they are coming from overseas, it would probably be best to have a company do this as there would be more paperwork involved, and your family member may have other more important issues to deal with at the time. Same deal with that RIV document though.

Also, the vehicles won't have to undergo emissions testing before entering Canada. However, they will have to be tested to be plated as this is the responsibility of the Province (kind of a double edged sword, I know). This year, the Province is testing even year model vehicles, so these vehicles will have to be tested before being plated. However, the test is rather fair. The emissions standard are based on the year of your vehicle, as it would be impossible for a 1990 to be as efficient as a 2000. If the vehicle fails the test, you must spend up to $200 to fix the problem. Once you reach $200, you won't have to spend more. Although, you then have 2 years to get that vehicle up to standard, which is hardest part of the whole ordeal.

There is a website that may help, www.driveclean.com.

Are Processes as difficult as here in the usa?
it is a 90 E34 //M5 and a 86 //M635 like mines
that he has. what if he landed the cars here in the usa then transported them to canada before
doing any of our federalizing work.....Do you think that is possible? or would a company have to be involved....

Pat,

I may be able to offer some help as I work for Canada Customs in Southern Ontario and would die without my 6er too. If your family member is coming to Canada via the USA, the car may enter using an R.I.V. form. This form is done at customs to import a vehicle into Ontario from the USA, and enable the owner to plate it in the province. The cost of the RIV is $182.00 (of course the gov't has to make some money right.) The RIV is then sent to the Ministry of Transportation, and a few weeks later, he can plate the car. The US spec 6 should have no problem, however I'm not sure about the Euro 6. Furthermore, we have a Drive Clean program in Ontario now, and every car made after 1981 will have to undergo emissions testing. Perhaps the Euro may be excempted? Not sure. I may be able to provide you with some telephone numbers to help you with you questions should you have any.

Hope it helped.

Rob

As I said before I have a family member migrating
to toronto canada. For him to take his car there
from germany, or here from the usa would he need a
company to do the importing as we do here in the usa?
