in the case of failure, your auto is designed to lock into third gear, as I am sure you know. this failure is likely mechanical, but may be electrical, as well. always explore all avenues before shelling tons of cash out for a new tranny. keep in mind, though, that labor gets a bit steep after three days of "tinkering." make it known to your tech that you are not a millionaire!

if it has failed, a rebuilt BMW-spec tranny is around two grand last I checked. not positive on that figure, however. if you DO have a few extra bucks to throw around, I suggest adding a sportier differential, too.

call metric mechanic, they are VERY knowledgeable on BMW motors and transmissions.
