There are a couple different starters for the E28 M5. The '88 one is the SR 41X, the '87 one is the SR 442X. Do you have the sticker (on the door jam) that specifies the manufacturing month and year? This can help get the specific info for you.

Hi. I have a local shop which can get me the gear & clutch ass'y. for my wife's E-28 ///M5 starter IF I can tell him what the Bosch part no. is. For the last 9 mo. or so, the starter doesn't grab on the first try. Another poster says all I have to do is replace the gear & clutch ass'y. instead of the whole starter. He'd had his out 4 times, so I think that he knows. Naturally, you all know how easy it is to even SEE the starter. I already have the R & R procedure down.

Anybody know this P/N/? TIA!
