VDO North America in Warranton, VA will fix the thing for about $70. They have a web page, but I don't know the url.

The odometer and trip meter on my ’81 633 isn’t working properly, but the speedometer is working fine. Sometime the odometer and trip meter stop working entirely, but after jiggling the trip meter reset button they start to work again. What can I try myself before removing the speedometer from the instrument cluster (oh joy) and taking it to a repair shop? TIA

Unfortunately nothing. The small plastic gears in the speedo have begun to slip and replacing them is the answer.

Sorry.
