If you don't mind the harsher (but more precise) ride and the need to be vigilant for potholes then go for the 17". The 16" look pretty damn good and give great performance too, so it's really a matter if you want that little extra performance and don't mind the downside.

For rims I would go for stock BMW (www.bmwwheels.com). My personal favorites for the 6 are the radial spoke (#32).

If you want to preserve your wallet I would check out BBS rims at www.tirerack.com. The RX are very reasonable. They might give you a good deal on a whole package, since you need the rubber too.

Hi all...time to change the TRX rims! I'm interested in year round rubber, decent ride, less hot rod..but hot looking nonetheless, and as unfettered with spacers, clearance issues, etc. My choices are 16"x8"Wheels with 225/50/16 rubber or 17"x8" Wheels with 235/45/17. I've researched the archives and want to read your thoughts. What are you thinking...and why? Thanks for your comments!
