The 'check engine' light (archive)

I found myself overextending my 528e's range and waited too long to refuel yesterday. As a result, just before I found the gas station I took a sharp right-hand turn and the engine stumbled and missed a bit before resuming normal operation. At that moment, the 'check engine' light came on and stayed for the next 3 starts and about 15 miles. When I started it for the 4th time, the light didn't come on.

Am I assuming correctly that either the temporary lack of fuel to the injectors or the fact that some sediment in the bottom of the fuel tank is likely the culprit? All seems well now and no, I won't let the tank get that low again. But I'd like to be reasonably sure that there's not some longer term damage done, or some sort of immediate service needed. Any thoughts?
