: : : : : : I have an 1988 528e, that I bought new in September 1988, and always thought it was a e28, but yesterday was told by another 'enthusiest' that the cars made after June of that year were the e34 cars, and the parts are not all interchangeable, like the shocks, etc.

If it is a 528e, it is an E28. As far as the differences between chassis, well, I have owned an E12 (528i), an E28 (528e), and an E34 (535i). Each has its good and bad points. Structural rigidity was not a strong point in the E28, but even with the small 6 it was a blast to drive and never failed me. The E12 had very raw edges, but was extremely competent and reliable. The E34 was perhaps a little too refined for my tastes (but as I get older I can appreciate refinement), but was by far the best performer of all. It was also the biggest consumer of cash when things went wrong. I know where each of these is now, and I'd take any one of them back in a heartbeat.
