Depends where you see the "A"...

1) If you see it in a dealer's ad, e.g. "1985 535iA for sale, $7,000" then it means the car is an automatic. It's a silly thing that's actually a pan-dealer "mistake" based on number 2:

2) If you look at the sticker in your door jamb, you may see "1985 535IA" which means a car built for the "A"merican market, actually all of North America. The dealers get screwed up because they look in the door and see the A and think it means automatic... since they see so few 5-speeds these days.
