recently, there have been several postings regarding the brake check light, and the steering boxes on the good ole 5's. my 85 535i has both of these issues: steering still lose, when adjusted properly, and check light flashing due to a detected error in the brake light system. when checked, there are no lights out, and error disappears when brake pedal is applied. always on start, the error returns, and i have trouble believing this is a factory setting.
i have heard rumours that the brake switch (by the pedal) has a two stage setting, and will work with either stage functioning, but an error is detected if one fails, or something to that effect. i'm not sure if this is true, but it seems to make sense. my car did not do that when i first bought it, but started shortly after, and has continued ever since. i always left it alone, but i will have to say that it is pretty annoying to get in and have that check light, and that red LED lighting up every time i start. Germans just don't usually do stuff like that. all the other check functions work flawlessly, as does the rest of the car... really great machines.

as to the steering, can these be rebuilt, and if not, what are other options?

any ideas appreciated :)
