The price is good (not a major steal, but good), BUT, asking to take the car to a mechanic is a pretty reasonable request, and I'd be concerned as to why they won't allow it. Also, cars that have been moved from state to state are also a bit suspicious.
I think I'd pass. If you are willing to spend $3,500, you are probably willing to spend $4,500 and for that money you should be able to buy a nice E28 535 with less miles and at least some records with a more traceable history.
: Considering 87 535is - 160K, 5spd.,Charcoal/black $3500 - No records, no documented history. Only shoulder shrugs from inept and ignorant used car lot. They obviously have no clue as to what they have. "Don't see many BMWs". However, car is in truly excellent condition. Paint is original and only slightly fading. No door dings. Interior is remarkable. Leather dry but no splits cracks or signifigant wear. Apparently, garaged until it began sitting in lot in January. Clutch seems fine, engine sounds/runs/idles fine, oils clean etc... Bushings look cracked. Do not see any new parts. Catch is: Won't allow mechanic check. Found a 1993 N.J. reciept in trunk (Car now in central FL). ANY ideas for indications or additional checks I could do would be appreciated or if original N.J. owner recognizes car....
