I just bought an 88' 535is 5-spd. w/ 138k mi.
It's in showroom condition-unbelievable condition
Flawless paint etc. etc. A new $2500 exhaust
system. All the records, maintained by a loving
BMW family. The e28's I looked at in Los Angeles
seem to be more thrashed, more non-garaged cars
with faded paint.
I paid $8200. The online Kelly Blue Book gave it
a range of $5000 - $9000. That is wholesale-retail I also looked at photo-buys to give me a sense
the market and most 85-88's were in the $2500 -
$7000 in a wide range of conditions. One was even a salvage title. I came close to buying an '87
535i 5-spd that seemed to be in OK shape by an seemingly shady guy who said $2000 on the spot.
I almost went for it, until I phoned my mechanic
and he told me I could drop $3000 in a heartbeat
in repairs. So I decided to buy the best one I
could afford and not have to worry about the
history of the car. I've had my cherry car for
a month now, and I am a total BMW convert, I love
this car. Previous to this, I drove a '74 Jensen
Healey for ten years. I plan on driving my 535
for the same amount of time. Judging from what
I've read in the e28 web sites, I know that won't be a problem.
