Basically, my M5 doesn't have the stock intake components (or stock exhaust, brakes, computer, suspension, wheels...). When Dinan Engineering did the 3.88 turbo conversion (which is an incredibly professional job - if anyone wants to know why Dinan is expensive, I'll gladly point at my car and say "Worth every penny."), they moved the airbox from the driver's side (normal M5 location) to the passenger side. Actually, they switched to a Porsche 944 Turbo airbox, slightly smaller than the OE box but emblazoned with the cool Porsche "turbo" script. Anyway, the M5 just has a flat plastic plate behind the passenger headlight. 535i/is owners can check their car and see that there is a snorkel from the airbox to the panel behind the light that lets the car breathe in nice cold outside air instead of hot underhood air. I'm hoping to install Ed's snorkel, adapt it to the Porsche box, and let the S38 motor (a la Pink Floyd) breathe in the air.
how often do you replace transmissions and differentials??
