Although it does sound like this is a lubricant selection issue, I'll share my recent experience and hope it's not your problem. My 533i, with 190K miles, just had all rear axle bearings and seals replaced, after displaying "whine" and "growl" noises. Our concern was that with bearing wear, the gears may have needed replacement also (far more expensive proposition), but with new bearings, she quieted down nicely.
