The $2K Rule simply states any 8yr+/100K+ BMW will ask for $2K of your money in 1st 12mo of ownership. Chet, Drews post points this out. Buy up front based on that and you will not be the fool in most cases. Plan to live with kick-nacks not working and idle problems that have an expensive fix. My 85 is still a great car but I would not own it if it was an auto because the idle is not always perfect. It is true for a few $ for vaccum hose can do wonders for some idle problems. Best of luck. Sticking with the $2K Rule improves your luck :) since you are buying something most people will not touch at any price. If you do not get in a hurry you can by solid BMW's at or 10-20% below www.kbb.com "trade-in" value. It is done daily all across the USA. Their retail price is of no value unless you total yours and you are settling with the insurance company but they are not stupid.

: FWIW, I sold my shimmy-free '86 528e with 111k miles for $3650 two months ago. If it had been a 5-speed I would have kept it. (It took about $1200 to remove all shimmy -- struts, thrust arms, control arms, sway bar links and tie rods).

: Good luck,
