Purpose of NiCads? (archive)

I recently posted a not about a jumpy temp gauge that could be briefly be brought to life by a good hand rap on the dash on top of the custer.

Several folks mentioned the SI board and the nicads.

Since my SI board is not present (it was unplugged from the cluster and not replaced by a previous owner), I was wondering if the NiCads did anything beside storing the SI information? Are they actually involved in the other instrument functions (Temp/Fuel)?

It seems like this is, indeed, a common problem!

Thanks,
Bob
