I have been in the midist of troubleshooting a stalling problem that has been occuring the last two years. I recentl read somethng on the bulletin board that caused me to change the fuel pump relay in my 1984 528e. The stalling problem went away - temporaily. It has occured twice today. While changing my cruise control actuator today I happened to notice a clip hanging loose (and electrical taped up) underneath the fuel pump relay. Pulled out Bently's I tried to determine why this was so...NO LUCK.

1) Would exactly does this fuel pump relay do??
2) Why does the car run when the relay is disconnected??
3) Why was pin 85 (at the relay) which is connected pin 20 on the motoronic unit (fuel pump relay control) disconnected??
4) What was the person that disconected it trying to accomplish??

All help would be greatly appreciated.
