I used to run Castrol GTX 20w-50 in my Bavarias. Sometimes I wondered if I should run a lighter weight in winter, but I never had a problem. Used it in my E28 for ~1 year after I got it with no problems, then decided to try Castrol Syntec 5w-50. Oil consumption between changes dropped from ~0.5 qt. GTX to 0.0 qt. Syntec, and it looks much cleaner...isn't black when I change it at 5,000 mi...and I no longer worry about the oil being like molasses on cold starts.
