10-40 oil used to be non recommended because to get the wide 10-40 viscosity range they had to addLOTS of VI(viscosity improver) that was NOT a lubricant, but rather an additive for the oil that could gum up and form deposits at high oil temps.

10-30 and 20-50 have less, and the straight weights have, I believe, none.
