I had a similar, very distressing, jerky hesitation in mine 1 1/2 years ago. Pulled the distributor and could see visible burning. Replaced the distributor and spark lines and problem went away.

Only difference from what you describe is that mine tended to be the worst accelerating (esp. from stop), not cruising.
