usually its either a cable on one side that's not engaging properly because it has shrunk or the cover plate screws that have come loose exposing the gear set. No big deal either way. You can always cut off some of the cable surround thus making the cable effectively longer. And you can use some loctite on the plate screws so they don't loosen up.

87 535i....my driver's seat back is twisted, won't recline and straighten fully on right side...is this a DIY project? thanks!!
