In the UK, when these vehicles were ordered from the dealer by the first keeper, the keeper had a no cost option to fit either metric or imperial alloys. I've just priced up metric tyres. Michelin inform me that the trx 390 HR tyre is now rated as a vintage tyre and will be available for some time ....at vintage prices! The only other maker, to my knowledge, is Avon. So the only other option is to track down the imperial six and a half j 14 rims. These are fitted with 190/70 HR 14 tyres which enable the car to retain the same appearance and same tyre/wheel diameter thereby not affecting the speedo reading etc. There was only one set of these rims available new in the UK a couple of months ago at a cost of £450 plus tyres. I've been keeping a look out in the local breakers yards and I've stuck gold. If you want their part number give me a mailing.I bought borbet 16" wheels and Bridgstone RE910 tires for my 535i at tirerack. $700 out the door, and a big improvement.
www.tirerack.com has a great section for wheels. You can see what they look like on the car and whether or not they're compatible. Good luck.
I know this subject has been written about endlessly, but with the search down, I'm asking for help...
I would like to replace my (Stock) 87 535is with 16"-17" wheels. I need to do this cheaply as I don't have $1-2K for wheels and tires. I am searching ads constantly, but usually find sets coming from 3 series.
My question...Is there anywhere that shows compatibility as well as offsets of other BMW factory rims so I can make an educated decision before I buy and install???
TIA
Rich
