Possibilities are 2.93:1, 3.25:1, 3.46:1 (mostly from E24s, I think), 3.73:1, and there is a 4.11:1 from the convertibles.
You may have to swap covers, but the covers DO interchange. There was an article in European Car a couple of years ago (written by Mike Miller), a great resource if you can track it down.
I'd only go for LSD, and unless you want a really crazy / specific ratio, I'd not bother with a rebuild.

What other model differentials will fit the 535? I have heard that there is quite a bit of interchange possible. I am getting the inevitiable "clunk" and the mounts are solid. Not only that, when I turn the wheels with the rear raised, I get about a quarter turn of one wheel and then the "clunk" before the other wheel turns.
How hard is it to rebuild a rearend?
Any help is appreciated.
