Auto trannies self destruct because they overheat when revved in neutral. The correct emissions procedure is to stop the car, and restart it in park. This relieves the pressure in the tranny and won't screw it over. Inspection stations SHOULD know about this. Tell them, and make sure they do it the correct way. A written TSB about this is available.

It's good to keep a piggy-bank for the inevitable tranny.

16x7.5's are available at Tire Rack or Discount tire. (www.tirerack.com, www.discounttire.com)

If you're used to Jap sports cars, I recommend you get sway bars (M5 sways available from Maximillian Importing along with the reinforcing tabs that need to be welded so the sway bar mounts don't rip off your car). That'll keep stock ride height while greatly improving handling. Only then do you want to go investing into shocks and springs. H&R's are good, RD's are stiffer. Bilsteins are a good value, Koni's are the best.

Dinan Chip is a good thing. Also, go for Hella headlight conversion ($200 for 100W lows and highs, you'll thank me on a dark night when you see the dear a good 1/4 mile away and have plenty of time to stop)

As far as no-no's go, DO NOT modify it in any way to make it look fast. Don't rice it. These cars are STEALTH cars. They look like your average, everyday, family, 4-door sedan....but can make mincemeat of anything this side of a Porsche 911 on the twisties.

Hello

I just purchased my first BMW, and I am pretty jazzed by it. I have been devouring the archives on this message board, and I have noticed a few quirks about the car I would like to ask about.

--- I noticed a few people mentioned auto tranny damage when you rev the car in neutral? not that i neutral drop a car, but just wondering if it is true.

--- is there anywhere you guys know of where i can get a good set of 16x7.5's to replace the 390s? new or used.. and what brands are good?

--- are there any other quirks or words of wisdom that you guys have for a new 535is owner? Any no-no's that someone that plans on worshipping his car, wouldnt think of? My previous experience is with japanese sports cars, Z class, Supras, etc..

I appreciate this greatly, I am joining the bmwcca, and look forward to being obsessed with my car. Thank you for your time and responses, in advance.
