The odometer is turned by three really weak plastic gears. When one of these break, one would think replacing a $0.10 part like this would be easy, no? Think again. You can either send the speedo to one of several repair shops, ads in the Roundel, or do what I did, get a used speedometer from a salvage yard, I suggest Vines Automotive (www.vinesbmw.com). This will cost you at least $85.00. Here's a photo of my used speedo. You can see two of the three gears, the third one, the smallest, is the one that broke. You can see its former location with the poorly drawn red arrow. Don't push the reset button while the car is moving!
