OK, I looked it up - what you do is short the two outside leads at the fuel sender cable connector, and the low fuel lamp should come on. In the past I've had success doing this with an unbent paperclip.

It could be that the low-fuel level switch in your fuel level sender is bad. That's what happened to my car ('86 528e) - a new sender fixed it. You can check it by shorting 2 of the 3 leads in the connector that plugs into the top of the sender - unfortunately I forget which are the correct leads to short! If you have the Bentley manual, it's in there - I'm at work so I can't look it up right now. When you short the correct leads, the low fuel light in your instrument panel should come on.

Hey everybody,

I've heard you guys talk about a low fuel light. I think mine's either broken or non-existent. I've had my gas tank down to 1.5 L (according to the OBC) and on the E mark, so where's this low fuel light? Any idea on how to fix it or to find out if it's even on my 85' 535i? Thanks a lot guys.

-Mike
