Engine cutting out above 4000 rpm - suggestions? (archive)

I've got an 88 528e, and my engine occasionally cuts out above 4000 rpm under hard acceleration. The tach drops by a couple hundred rpm, and then it comes back again. The cut out is very breif, but quite dramatic (it's not just a cylinder or two missing). This does not occur at lower rpms. The main relay has been replaced, and I cleaned the contacts to the fuel pump relay, and its fuse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig (growing fearful of hard acceleration)
