Thanks for the help, guys. I took it to my mechanic today, he looked at it, listened to it, and said that by some stroke of luck, there's no noticeable damage--the scraping sound isn't indicative of engine damage as it's intermittent. Oddly, i haven't heard it since last night As far as the pressure guage... yup, I'm getting the VDO trio that fits in place of the ashtray as soon as possible!

Oh, its serious alright. Personally, I'd source a rebuilt motor or a good used one and drop it in, then figure out just how messed up your old one is. Quite likely, you have major damage that will necessitate a full rebuild and possibly a new cylinder head.
You might want to install an oil pressure guage while you're at it.
I have an '86 535i, and recently, my oil pan was cracked and I lost all my oil. Unfortantely, I drove for about 100 miles (of hard driving) with no oil before I realized the pan was cracked. I replaced the pan and gasket and refilled with oil, and now I have a grinding type sound (like metal scraping on metal) coming from the engine just around 1800 rpm. Any ideas on what this is or how to fix it or if it's serious? Or if they're even related?
Thanks,
Richard
