You put antifreeze/water mix in, and not straight antifreeze, right? If the problem was trapped air in the coolant system, here's my routine:

Squeeze the upper radiator hose a bunch of times just after I put the coolant in. This brings trapped air up. Add coolant. Repeat until no more air. Run the engine for just enough time to circulate the coolant (30 sec. should do it) and get more trapped air up into the radiator. Add more coolant. Repeat this whole routine until no more air shows up. Check it again after a short drive and cooldown. Probably not perfect, but it's always worked for me.

well heres the abridged version for now...made it to seattle, my 5er broke on the way...after losing two belts and spending the nite stranded on the grapevine..she later over heated. pleny of coolant, my guess was air in the system. had to remove all hoses aand purge the air out using a garden hose at a truck stop,,,,,,what did i do wrong....and how can i prevent this ?????

thx, jim in sd
