I installed a battery holder and replaced the SI batteries with 1000mAhr radio shack NiCads two nights ago. I reset the si lights and inspection light and everything seemed to go fine. A few hours later I went out to check on my car. I turned the key and for a quarter second the green SI lights lit up like they were supposed to. Then they went out and the oil service, red and yellow lights lit. The yellow and red lights continue to shine if I take the key out. It is especially frustrating because after this happens the SI board does not like to reset so I end up disconnecting the car battery and si batteries in order to get it to a point where it will reset again. Does anyone know what is going on?
Its an 87 M6 by the way.
I know, its not an e28 but it is similar as far as the si boad goes. Besides we bimmer enthusiests need to stick to gether in times of crisis :)
Many Thanks.Besides what dana said, did you use 1.2 volt batteries? The factory NiCd's are 600mah and 1.2 volts. Also the cmos chip is sensitive to static. Did you check all the solder points on the board? It might be that the SI board just needs to be replaced.
