You're right, low profile tires cannot increase torque. However, if they're shorter than another tire, they will have the effect of going to a higher-numerical gear due to the reduced diameter. Of course, they'll also revolve more for a given distance.

Conversely, look out for those 4-wheelers with the massive-diameter tires. The tires might be bigger, but the brakes won't be. If the diameter is 25% greater, the brakes will be 25% less effective. Of course, they probably don't give any consideration to it.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do low profile tires increase torque?

It is not an increase in torque itself it is an increase in the actual amount you transfer onto the ground at one time. The diameter is decreased so the tire spins more times than for example a 205/60/16 combination would. I admit I am not all that educated in this area and sorry if I mis led you, but the I noticed a significant increase in the actual torque I felt coming form the car with 17' rims than the amount I felt with my 16 inch rims. I guess what I said is almost like saying that the japanese decals on a Honda give it more horsepower.
