I was told the '85 535i had a better(stronger?)5-speed transmission than later year 535i's. Other than electric seats what other differences are there between early and later year 535i's. What about significant differences in the 533i? Is there a particular model year for either car that is better than others?

A few differences of opinion are out there about the horsepower and torque for either model!

I understand the HP for either is the same, 182, but the 535i has 10% more torque and a lower final drive ratio, (2.63:1) than the 533i. Peak HP for the 535i is at 5400 rpm instead of 6000 for the 533i. Better acceleration (0-60)times for the 535i? Which has a higher top speed?

i have an 84 533i & an 87 535i both 5sp the 533 seems to have better low end torque the 535 seems to open up after 4000 rpm alittle more dramaticlly also it seems that more performance parts are available for the 535
