on a head job and suspension work down the road. good luck! I came across an '86 black/tan 535i on a dealer's lot today. At $6900, I know this car is way overpriced but I wanted to see what you guys think it's worth. It's a 5 speed with 207K miles, front air dam and trunk spoiler (both look good), and 16" Borbet alloys with nearly new tires. The body appears rust-free (northwest car) and pretty straight except for a small dent on the corner of the roof, just above the driver's door. The leather interior is OK but does have some cracking in the seats. The engine compartment is well sorted and clean. When I first fired it up it blew quite a bit of smoke (valve seals/guides?) but the car ran really strong; I was actually impressed with its acceleration over 4000rpm. The clutch felt fine as did the suspension and brakes. The salesman implied I could probably get the car much cheaper as it's a VW dealer and they basically just want to get it off their lot (they make much more money off newer VW and Japanese car trade-ins). Before I purchase anything I want to see maintenance receipts (which I don't know if the dealer has) but my gut feeling is this car is worth maybe $2500-$3500 considering the rust-free body, apparently decent mechanical condition, and like-new aftermarket wheels/tires. I do suspect it'll need some head work soon. What do you think it's worth?
