I don't know what year is your car, but my '85 528e didn't had any wiring in the doors! YOu mentioned that your car had already premium speakers at the rear so it sounds more like the PO (previous owner) removed them or blew them up and wouldn't pay the replacement price! If you have a 4" round speaker on an oval shaped adapter metal plate on your kick panels then definitely your car had them before!

It does makes a world of a difference!
